How does a pastor craft and deliver sermons in a way that moves people? This is the topic that pastors and church leaders will be learning about at this year’s Heritage Preaching Lectures hosted by Heritage Theological Seminary on October 3rd.

This year, Heritage will be welcoming Dr. Winfred Neely to be the guest lecturer at the popular annual event to speak on the topic of preaching that moves people.

Dr. Neely currently teaches at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois as a Professor of Biblical Preaching. Neely also serves as Senior Pastor of Judson Baptist Church in Oak Park, Illinois, and is the author of a number of publications including his latest book, How to Overcome Worry: Experiencing the Peace of God in Every Situation.

For over 20 years, Heritage Theological Seminary has hosted the annual Heritage Preaching Lectures, bringing renowned pastors and scholars to the school to teach on various topics related to preaching. The goal of the event each year is to help equip pastors and other ministry leaders with the tools needed to sharpen their skills in order to serve their churches and congregations well.

The event will also include a special day for pastor’s wives and women serving in ministry to also be encouraged and equipped. Participants in this free women’s event will have the opportunity to learn from Dr. Terri Stovall from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and hosted by Dr. Linda Reed of Heritage Theological Seminary.

Dr. J. Stephen Yuille (Vice President of Academics and Academic Dean of College at Heritage College & Seminary) believes there’s much to learn from those who’ve gone before us. By way of example he points to the English puritan and pastor Thomas Manton (1620-1677). "He was a towering figure during a particularly turbulent time in English history," says Dr. Yuille. "More importantly, he was a faithful pastor who fulfilled his charge with unwavering devotion to God’s Word and God’s people. His published sermons (22 volumes) are a treasure trove of biblical wisdom, theological insight, and pastoral counsel."

Dr. Yuille introduces us to Thomas Manton in his most recent book, Great Spoil: Thomas Manton’s Spirituality of the Word. The main purpose of the book is to demonstrate the centrality of God’s Word to Manton’s approach to the Christian life. Dr. Yuille believes Manton’s example is timely, given the tendency of many evangelicals to adopt a subtle form of mysticism – the belief that we are able to sense the Holy Spirit working directly within us, producing impulses as a means of communicating God’s will to us. "I think this kind of approach to spirituality is potentially dangerous because it ultimately severs the Spirit of God from the Word of God, thereby divorcing Him from the only infallible and sufficient revelation that He has given us – the Bible," warns Dr. Yuille. "Thomas Manton puts us back on solid ground by reminding us that God’s Spirit always speaks through God’s Word."

Great Spoil also emphasizes Manton’s conviction that the Holy Spirit renews and revives our hearts by means of God’s Word. Throughout his sermons, Manton insists that the heart is "a chaos of desires, seeking to be filled with something from without." For Dr. Yuille, this message is crucial when it comes to the Christian life. "Without constant care, the heart will seek satisfaction in the wrong things. This is one of the reasons why the Word of God is so important. It’s the means by which the Holy Spirit constantly orients our hearts heavenward."

Manton’s biblical piety also highlights the need for Christians to engage in the practice of spiritual duties and disciplines. These are the means through which the Holy Spirit works in us, cultivating greater love for God. "Manton believes that the spiritual life is maintained through faith and that faith is cultivated by God’s Word. It’s the means by which God sends His life-giving Spirit," says Dr. Yuille. "We must, therefore, be diligent in the use of the means of grace," whereby we receive "further measures and degrees" of the Holy Spirit. These are "the great fuel of faith" – the means by which faith is "begotten" and "increased."

All told, Manton’s spirituality of the Word is a much-needed reminder that the Bible is God’s voice – that which "goes out" from God’s "mouth" (Isa. 55:11). For this reason, we must listen to it as if we heard God speaking to us from heaven, rejoicing like those who find "great spoil" (Ps. 119:162).

Dr. J. Stephen Yuille (Vice President of Academics and Academic Dean of College at Heritage College & Seminary) admits that for most of his adult life he was a little intimidated by Psalm 119. However, five years ago, he committed himself to teaching through it in the church where he was pastoring. Now, he shares his insights in his new book The Path of Life: Blessedness in Seasons of Lament.

The main theme of Psalm 119, according to Dr. Yuille, is the stability and sufficiency of God’s Word in every circumstance of life. He believes this is an important message for Christians as we strive to live faithfully through trying times. “When unwanted, uninvited, and unanticipated change shakes our lives, we need to stand on a solid foundation. Psalm 119 shows us how,” says Dr. Yuille. The Path of Life takes readers on a journey through the psalmist’s many ups and downs, while emphasizing his joy, strength, and endurance, as he seeks to walk with God and abide in His Word.

The book also includes many reflections from respected scholars and pastors from the church’s past. This is intentional, as Dr. Yuille believes it is important to embrace these historical voices in order to learn from their insights while connecting with the church’s rich heritage. “C. S. Lewis was concerned about our tendency to ignore voices from the past because we assume that we’ve advanced well beyond their myopic understanding,” says Dr. Yuille. “And so, in this book, I incorporate several historical voices – not only to glean from their collective wisdom, but to demonstrate that we’re part of something much bigger than our contemporary context suggests.”

While Psalm 119 is filled with hope in God and His Word, it is also an expression of great lament. For Dr. Yuille, there is an urgent need today to develop a biblical view of lament, especially given the negative influence of the prosperity gospel on the way many Christians approach life and suffering. The Psalms of lament (particularly Psalm 119) are a timely remedy because they show us what it means to look to God when our lives are touched by the ravages of the fall. “They give expression to our experience, and they teach us how to draw near to God in the darkness,” explains Dr. Yuille. “My prayer is that this book contributes to a better understanding of this comforting reality.”

Heritage College and Seminary is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Michael Haykin to our Seminary Faculty as Professor of Church History. He begins this role part-time on July 1, 2019. Haykin has served as an adjunct faculty member of Heritage for several years. We are excited about the expansion of his role and are to have him continuing serving at Heritage in a broader capacity.

The Ontario Chapter of The Gospel Coalition in partnership with Heritage College and Seminary, RZIM, FEB Central, and Muskoka Bible Centre is hosting an all-day Conference on Saturday May 25^th with Sam Allberry at Morningstar Christian Fellowship (7601 Sheppard Ave. E., Scarborough) from 9am – 5pm. Sam is a same-sex attracted Anglican Rector who speaks on behalf of The Gospel Coalition and RZIM. The Conference will include these three sessions as well as Q and A with Sam. 1.)
